They say that it’s impossible to please all of the people all of the time but the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee does a pretty good job at pleasing just about anyone looking for a midsize crossover SUV. Every version of the Grand Cherokee is stylish, capable, comfortable, and highly desirable, but depending on how it’s specified, the 2021 Grand Cherokee can be anything from a thoroughly sensible family hauler to a fire-breathing track-day beast, and just about anything you can think of in between.
Some automakers stick to three or four trim levels for their midsize crossover SUVs while others offer buyers a wider choice of as many as five, six, or even seven. Jeep has decided to leave them all in its wake by offering the 2021 Grand Cherokee in no fewer than a staggering 11 different trim levels. And of course, that’s all before you start to choose from the vast range of exterior colours, alloy wheels, interiors, and different engines.
The most affordable version of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the Laredo which boasts a standard specification that’s way above those rival entry models that can sometimes be stripped-down fleet versions designed to deliver an eye-catchingly low starting MSRP to draw buyers in. Beyond the Laredo, you then have the Altitude, Limited, 80th Anniversary Edition, Trailhawk, Limited X, Overland, High Altitude, Summit, SRT, and finally the simply spectacular range-topping Trackhawk.
Jeep isn’t bothering to mess around with one of those small-displacement four-cylinder engines that can struggle in a vehicle as substantial as the Grand Cherokee. Instead, the standard engine for 2021 is a powerful 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 that develops 295 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque and sends its power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. From the Trailhawk to the Summit trim level you then have the option of upgrading to a 5.7-litre HEMI V-8 which then puts 260 horsepower at the Jeep’s disposal.
If even that isn’t enough power and performance for you the SRT comes with a 6.4-litre HEMI V-8 producing 475 horsepower that gets the Grand Cherokee from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds. But if you want the ultimate performance SUV, check out the very appropriately named Trackhawk which boasts a supercharged 6.2-litre V-8 that puts out 707 horsepower and gets the four-wheel drive to 60 mph from standing in a mind-blowing 3.5 seconds.
Even though there are four different engines and four different variations of the Grand Cherokee’s four-wheel-drive system, there’s a lot more to the Jeep than just performance and capability. That’s because this is also an extremely comfortable, practical, versatile, and even luxurious midsize crossover that can be specified with just about every feature you can think of.
Even the entry-level Laredo comes standard with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power liftgate, remote start, 18-inch alloy wheels, a power sunroof, Keyless Enter ‘n Go with proximity entry, and push-button start, and a maximum tow rating of 2,812 kg. From there, the Altitude models come with standard black leather-faced seats with perforated suede inserts while the rest of the lineup above the Altitude get various designs of gorgeous Nappa leather upholstery.
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is an incredible vehicle that’s available in an equally incredible number of versions to suit just about any SUV buyer who doesn’t need a third-row seat.
