To say you’re considering buying a new 2021 Ram 1500 would be a bit like saying you’re considering buying a new item of clothing; accurate, but woefully unspecific. That’s because here in Canada there are no fewer than eight different trim levels, five engines, two drivetrains, three cabs, and two different bed lengths, and all that’s before you even start to look at the available packages and the extensive options list. Basically, whatever you need a full-size, light-duty pickup to be for work, rest, or for play in Rosetown, Saskatoon, or Regina, there’s a version of the Ram 1500 that will fit the bill perfectly.
The eight different trim levels currently available in the 2021 Ram 1500 lineup start with the entry-level Tradesman trim that delivers a great value blend of capability, utility, and value for money and definitely lives up to its name. From there the ranges go up through Big Horn, Sport, Rebel, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, Limited, and finally to the incredible and incredibly capable TRX at the top of the range.
If the Tradesman is something of a utilitarian workhorse with all the basics covered but no unnecessary frills, the highest trim levels offer just about every conceivable feature and the awesome TRX goes to another level of capability and performance.
While it can be easy to get carried away with all the different powertrain options for the 2021 Ram 1500, we really shouldn’t overlook just how good and how capable the base engine still is. The standard unit for the Ram 2021 1500 is a tried and tested 3.6-litre V-6 that puts out a very creditable 305 horsepower which will be more than enough unless you have some more serious towing and hauling applications in mind for your new truck. If you do, there’s also a 3.0-litre V-6 EcoDiesel, two versions of a 5.7-litre V-8, and an incredible 6.2-litre supercharged V-8 to select from.
Most models are standard rear-wheel drive with four-wheel-drive available and an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board. The maximum available payload is 1043 kg and that comes from the Ram 1500 in rear-drive form with the Quad Cab, while a front-drive Quad Cab with the 5.7-litre eTorque V-8 can tow up to 5783 kg.
It’s no exaggeration to say that just about every feature you can find in a luxury sedan or SUV these days is probably available at some level in the 2021 Ram 1500 family. You can dress your 1500 to impress with several Appearance Packages such as the Night Edition Package that’s available for Sport, Rebel, Laramie, and Limited versions of the Ram 1500, and that’s after you’ve chosen from 12 different exterior colours and 15 different interiors.
Even the entry-level Tradesman trim comes with standard power locks and windows, remote keyless entry, a rearview backup camera, and the Uconnect 3 multimedia centre with a 5-inch touchscreen and six speakers. At the other end of the lineup, Limited models are the most luxurious in their class with the likes of large 12-inch touchscreen, luxury leather upholstery, 20-inch alloy wheels, and Active-Level Four-Corner Air Suspension. And if you fancy the most incredible off-road performance truck that walks the walk at least as well as it talks the talk, just take a look at the simply awesome Ram 1500 TRX.
