Not too long ago, some auto industry commentators were predicting the end of the road for full-size, truck-based SUVs as their more carlike crossover successors grew in popularity exponentially. Of course, they were wrong then and they are even more wrong now as they remain popular with buyers, and now Jeep is getting in on the act with the sensational all-new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. The Wagoneer name may be very familiar, but this is very much an all-new model in every other way that deserves close attention.
The concept of a body-on-frame construction may not exactly be a cutting-edge idea these days, but Jeep is bringing right up to date with the Wagoneer thanks to premium suspension components, a multi-link independent rear suspension and a double-wishbone front suspension to enhance both ride quality and capability.
There are a few nods to Wagoneer models of the past with styling cues such as sides with upright windows shaped like those of the original, and the new Wagoneer also keeps to Jeep convention with a forward-canted seven-slot grille that’s flanked by headlights that run from the grille into the front fenders. The all-new Wagoneer is a very attractive vehicle with a truly premium feel and the kind of presence only a full-size SUV can deliver.
The all-new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is a substantial vehicle by any measure with its comfortable seating capacity for eight people and the capability to tow up to 4,536kg (10,000 pounds), so a suitably big and powerful engine has to be the order of the day. Thankfully, whatever you want to do with your new Wagoneer in and around Rosetown, Saskatoon or Regina, Jeep has provided an engine that’s more than up to the task.
Under the hood of the new Wagoneer is a 5.7-litre V-8 that puts out 391 horsepower and 404 lb.-ft. of torque, which is then sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, that’s not all as the Wagoneer also features the eTorque mild hybrid system which can provide another 130 lb.-ft. of torque at takeoff. All that is enough to propel the Wagoneer from 0 to 60mph in a pretty swift 7.3 seconds.
A new level of luxury and opulence has been added to the Jeep ranks with the reintroduction of the Wagoneer to the lineup for 2022. There’s a ton of space in all three rows of seats and the interior quality is pretty special throughout the cabins of both available trim levels, which here in Canada are the entry-level Wagoneer Series II and the higher-spec Wagoneer Series III.
Series II models come standard with Jeep’s Quadra-Trac I 4WD System but Series III gets the more advanced Quadra-Trac II. Both 4×4 systems feature Selec-Terrain Traction Management, but while the Wagoneer Series II comes Rear Load Levelling Suspension, that gets upgraded to an Adaptive Damping Suspension if you have a Series III.
The Series II model’s list of standard equipment is incredibly impressive. Standard features include a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch centre touchscreen, tri-zone automatic climate control, nappa leather upholstery, 12-way power-adjustable front seats that are heated and cooled, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, navigation, remote start, 20-inch alloy wheels, and plenty more.
If you think you know what to expect from the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer then think again. This is a model that takes Jeep comfort, luxury, and capability to an entirely new level and it really does put a cat among the pigeons in the full-size luxury SUV segment.
